Clopay Cable & Drum Replacement: The The Woodlands Owner’s Guide

Clopay cable and drum replacement in The Woodlands typically runs $130-$250 installed, and we stock the common Clopay drum sizes and cable lengths on our trucks for same-day completion. Most homeowners notice the problem when the door sits crooked, one side hangs lower, or the cables look frayed or unspooled from the drum. If your Clopay door is stuck partway open or making a grinding metal sound from the header, the cable-and-drum assembly is the first place we look.

Which Clopay Models This Applies To

Clopay builds doors across several product lines, and the drum and cable setup varies by door weight and track configuration. We regularly replace these parts on the Classic Collection, Gallery Collection, and Coachman Series in The Woodlands neighborhoods. The heavier Reserve Wood and Grand Harbor doors use larger 12-inch or 18-inch drums with thicker 1/8-inch or 5/32-inch aircraft-grade cables. Lighter steel doors, including the Value Series, run smaller 8-inch drums with standard 3/32-inch cable.

To identify what you need, check the Clopay model sticker on the interior side of the door section. The part number prefix tells us the collection, and the door width plus spring type (standard torsion or EZ-SET) determines drum diameter and cable length. A 16-foot wide door with standard-lift torsion springs takes a different drum than the same width with low-headroom or high-lift track. We carry both OEM Clopay drums and cables and quality aftermarket equivalents from DDM and Garage Door Nation that meet or exceed factory specs. For most Clopay steel doors under 12 years old, the aftermarket option saves thirty to forty dollars with no practical difference in service life. On wood-clad or custom-order doors, we typically recommend OEM to preserve the exact weight balance Clopay engineered.

Signs Your Clopay Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing

  • The door hangs crooked or one side drops faster. When a cable frays or slips off its drum, that side of the door loses lift support. The torsion spring still pulls the good side, so the door torques in the track and binds. In The Woodlands, we see this most after humid summers when cable corrosion weakens the strands near the bottom bracket.
  • Visible fraying, rust, or broken strands on the cable. Aircraft cable is woven from many thin galvanized wires. Once the outer jacket shows rust bloom or three or more broken strands in a six-inch span, the remaining wires carry overload. The cable will fail completely, usually at the worst possible moment.
  • Cable is unspooled or overlapping on the drum. This means the drum groove is worn, the cable was wound wrong after a previous repair, or the drum set-screw has loosened. An overlapping cable crushes itself under load and cuts service life by more than half.
  • Grinding or clicking from the header area when the door moves. A cracked drum hub or stripped torsion tube fit will let the drum wobble. The sound is metal-on-metal where there should be none. We replaced three of these last month in Panther Creek alone, all on doors installed during the 2012-2014 building wave.
  • Door falls closed hard or won’t stay open. If the cable has snapped entirely, the spring torque is unbalanced. The opener may still pull the door, but the safety risk is real. A 200-pound door free-falling from chest height will damage whatever it hits.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Clopay cable and drum replacement in The Woodlands runs $130-$250 installed, depending on door width, drum size, and whether both sides need work. A single cable on a standard 16-foot steel door with a sound drum sits at the lower end. Dual cable replacement plus both drums on a heavy wood-clad door reaches the upper end.

Every quote we give is flat and final. We state the price before touching a tool. The work includes removal of the failed components, installation of matched cable and drum, tension rebalancing, lubrication of all moving parts, and a full cycle test. Your invoice shows parts and labor separately because that is how a square deal looks. The 90-Day Done Right Promise covers the work in writing. If something is not right, we come back. No paperwork to file, no argument.

DIY or Call Us?

There is an honest line here. A homeowner can safely look at the cables and drums with the door closed and the opener disconnected. Check for rust, fraying, or cable off the drum. If you see those things, stop.

What you should not do: release or adjust torsion spring tension, remove a set-screw from a loaded drum, or try to wind cable onto a drum by hand. The torsion spring above your Clopay door stores enough torque to cause serious injury. We have seen broken wrists and worse from DIY drum work. The cable itself is not the danger. The spring tension behind it is.

We carry Clopay-compatible drums and cables on every truck. Most jobs in The Woodlands finish in under ninety minutes. Call (346) 682-0797 and we will quote it flat, do it right, and move on.
