Clopay Roller Replacement: The The Woodlands Owner’s Guide

Clopay roller replacement in The Woodlands typically runs $110-$220 installed, and we stock the right nylon and steel rollers for most Clopay doors on our trucks. Most jobs in The Woodlands finish in under an hour once we’re on site. You’ll know your rollers are going when the door starts shaking in the track, grinding on the way up, or leaving black grease on the inside of the panels.

Which Clopay Models This Applies To

Clopay has used three main roller systems across their residential lines, and mixing them up is where most do-it-yourself orders go wrong. The Classic Collection and Premium Series built from the mid-2000s forward use standard 2-inch stem rollers with a 7/16-inch diameter shaft. The Avante and Modern Steel lines, popular in newer The Woodlands builds near Creekside Park, run a narrower 1 3/4-inch roller with a sealed bearing that does not interchange. The Coachman Collection, common in the older Panther Creek and Grogan’s Mill homes, sits in between with a heavier-duty 2-inch roller but a longer stem that won’t seat in standard hardware.

We check the stem length, roller diameter, and whether your track is standard or low-headroom before we quote. Clopay’s OEM rollers carry their part number stamped on the stem collar, but we’ve found the DURA-LIFT and Prime-Line sealed nylon equivalents hold up just as well in The Woodlands humidity and cost less. We carry both. Mainspring Garage Door Co. is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Clopay.

Signs Your Clopay Roller Replacement Is Failing

  • The door shudders or jerks as it moves. The roller bearings have dried out or the wheel has flattened on one side. In The Woodlands, this happens faster than drier climates because garage humidity swells the nylon and washes out factory grease.
  • You hear metal-on-metal grinding or squealing. The roller wheel has cracked or the bearing race has failed, letting the stem drag directly against the track. This will chew the track if you keep running it.
  • Black grease streaks appear on the door panels or floor. The roller seal has split and the bearing grease is slinging out. Once the grease is gone, the steel stem starts rusting inside the wheel.
  • The door binds or sticks at certain points. One or more rollers have seized and no longer turn, causing the opener to fight a sliding door instead of a rolling one. This strains the opener and the top section.
  • Visible wobble or the roller sits crooked in the track. The stem has bent from impact or the roller wheel has worn into an oval shape. A bent stem will eventually pop the roller out of the track entirely.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Price Range in The Woodlands
Single roller replacement $110-$160
Full set (10-12 rollers) $180-$220
Track inspection & adjustment Included with full set

The $110-$220 range covers parts, labor, and disposal of the old rollers. A single failed roller in an otherwise smooth door gets you to the lower end. A full set on a 16-foot door with seized or mismatched rollers runs higher because we also realign the track and check every hinge. We quote the flat price before we touch a tool, and that price does not change once we start. The work carries our 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing.

DIY or Call Us?

Rollers are not under spring tension, so a homeowner with a wrench and a ladder can safely inspect them. Pull the release cord on your opener, lift the door manually to the halfway point, and wiggle each roller. If it spins freely and sits straight, it’s fine. If it grinds, wobbles, or won’t turn, it’s done.

Where DIY goes wrong is trying to swap rollers with the door in the track. The bottom rollers sit in a bracket under spring tension, and the middle rollers require partially disassembling the track to remove. We’ve had The Woodlands homeowners call us after bending track or dropping a section trying to force a roller in. If you’re not set up to support the door weight and realign the track after, it’s not worth the scraped knuckles. Call (346) 682-0797 and we’ll quote it flat, do it right, and move on.
