Craftsman Torsion Spring Replacement: The The Woodlands Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Craftsman-compatible torsion springs for most residential models, with typical installed pricing running $180-$340 in The Woodlands. Most replacements are completed in a single visit because we carry the common wire sizes and lengths on our trucks. You’ll usually discover the failure on a Tuesday morning when the door won’t lift, or when you hear a loud bang from the garage the night before.

Which Craftsman Models This Applies To

Craftsman garage doors and openers have been sold through Sears, Ace Hardware, and Lowe’s for decades, and the torsion spring you need depends on the door’s weight and height, not just the brand sticker. We regularly see three groups in The Woodlands: the older Sears-installed steel doors from the 1990s and early 2000s, the later 1/2 HP and 3/4 HP belt-drive opener systems, and the current AssureLink and myQ-compatible lines.

The critical detail is the spring’s wire gauge, inner diameter, and overall length. Craftsman doors often used .250″ or .262″ wire in 2″ or 2-1/4″ ID springs, but we’ve found mismatches where a previous installer substituted a longer, weaker spring instead of the correct spec. Check the winding cone: Craftsman-labeled springs typically carry a red or black paint mark indicating wind direction, and the part number is stamped on the stationary cone if it hasn’t rusted over. We carry both OEM-spec springs and high-cycle aftermarket equivalents rated for 15,000 cycles. For most homeowners in The Woodlands, the aftermarket option outlasts the original because of the heat and humidity cycling we get here.

Signs Your Craftsman Torsion Spring Replacement Is Failing

  • The door feels heavy or won’t stay open halfway. A torsion spring stores energy to offset the door’s weight. When it loses tension through metal fatigue, the opener strains and the door drifts downward. In Panther Creek and Sterling Ridge, we see this most often on 16-foot doors that cycle twice daily.
  • You heard a loud crack or bang from the garage. That’s the sound of a spring snapping, usually when the door is closed and the spring is fully wound. The noise echoes through the house, and the door will not budge afterward.
  • The opener motor runs but the door barely moves. Craftsman openers have force-limit settings, and when the spring fails, the opener detects the overload and reverses or stalls. Continuing to run the motor risks stripping the nylon gears in the opener head.
  • A visible gap in the spring coils. A healthy torsion spring has tight, uniform coils. A gap of two inches or more means the spring has broken internally, even if the halves haven’t separated dramatically.
  • The door is crooked or one cable is slack. On dual-spring Craftsman setups, one spring often fails before the other. The remaining spring carries uneven load, pulling the door off-center and throwing the cables out of balance.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Price Range in The Woodlands
Single torsion spring replacement (standard cycle) $180-$260
Dual spring replacement or high-cycle upgrade $260-$340
Winding cone or hardware replacement (if corroded) Included in spring price
Lubrication and 21-point safety check Included

What moves the price within that range is the spring’s cycle rating, whether we’re replacing one or both springs, and the condition of the end bearings and cables. We quote the flat price after measuring, before any work starts. The $180-$340 covers parts, labor, disposal of the old spring, and our 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If you’re a senior or veteran, we take 5% off the total. We also honor any written estimate from another shop with our free second opinion.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a short list of things you can safely check yourself. Look at the spring for a gap. Pull the red emergency release cord and try lifting the door manually; if it weighs more than a few pounds, the spring is not doing its job. Check if the cables are off the drums.

What you should not do is unwind a loaded torsion spring. The torque stored in a standard 16-foot door spring can cause serious injury or worse if the winding bars slip. We’ve seen bent bars, broken wrists, and doors slammed off their tracks from DIY attempts in Grogan’s Mill and Indian Springs. The cones and set screws on Craftsman springs are not forgiving of partial engagement or the wrong socket size. If the spring is under tension, call us. We carry the right bars, the right springs, and we quote it flat before touching a tool. Carl Dutton and our crew have handled this repair hundreds of times across The Woodlands, and we get it done without the guesswork.
